Monique Cuyugan Tuzon is Miss World Philippines 2018 top bet
Sports enthusiasts, particularly basketball fans, should be familiar with the face of Angelica Dominque Cuyugan Tuzon (Monique Cuyugan Tuzon) who is Basketball TV and Solar Sports’ more popular sports reporter.
The grand niece of Philippine opera diva Fides Cuyugan Asensiois aiming high, beyond the basketball court, her turf on television. She has joined the roster of candidates for this year’s Miss World Philippines.
She is candidate No. 14 and if luck would be on her side, she could win one of four titles – Miss World Philippines, Reina Hispanico Americana Philippines, Miss Eco Philippines, and Miss Multinational Philippines – in the pageant on Oct. 7 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Last week the pretty Miss World Philippines candidate met with the entertainment press to tell them why she finally acceded to her friends’ request to try the beauty pageant platform.
Now 25-years old (born on May 6, 1993), “It could be my last chance to join a beauty pageant,” she said (for single women).
In 2012, when she was still a student in Charlotte, NC, she won Miss Asia Carolinas (“I needed the prize. It was a scholarship,” she revealed) but never gave joining a beauty pageant serious thought. “I am a big fan of beauty pageants. I love watching the candidates in their evening gowns and how they answer the questions, but that’s about it.”
Momique was born in the Philippines but moved to the US with her mom when she was 11. She returned to Manila last year and started working with Solar Entertainment as producer and reporter for Solar Sports and Basketball TV.
She actually dreams to be a host of a lifestyle show, “But that is far from being realized because I don’t see much lifestyle shows on free TV in the Philippines,” she said.
Sports may be her strong point as a TV reporter having interned at WBTV in Charlotte, but her interests are far ranging – she was in a Church Youth Leader and Worship Team, a team captain at University of North Carolina Charlotte Area during the Relay for Life, she found and organized “Rise Above the Storm 5k Run while on the side modeling for an apparel brand.
Yeah, it may be her last and only chance for a beauty title, yet the Miss World Philippines 2018 pageant could open more doors for this young sports TV producer/reporter. She might even accept an acting offer if any. “I can learn anything. I’m fast. Throw me something and I can learn it in a jiffy,” she said in her American-accented Filipino.
I asked Monique if it didn’t occur to her to be in Hollywood as actor either on TV or in the movies as she can pass for a Latina. She was surprised and said, “No, I didn’t think about that because I knew it is difficult to get into Hollywood. But, thank you, anyway.”
