Kapuso, Kapamilya mix equals ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye’

We’ve seen Kapuso stars hopping over to the Kapamilya lot for big-screen projects before. Dingdong Dantes had appeared in a number of movies produced by Star Cinema, the film production arm of ABS-CBN, most notable among them have been, The Unmarried Wife,Seven Sundays, and just last year, Fantastica, with Vice Ganda.

But, the excitement in the new Kapuso and Kapamilya tandem in Hello, Love Goodbye is less than explosive as the fandoms of the two stars – Alden Richards and Kathryn Bernardo are equally thrilled at the mere idea of them in a love story that the box-office director Cathy Garcia Molina directed.

As the film’s opening nears (it will be in theaters nationwide beginning 31July), the excitement around the film builds up as the two are repetitively on a promo mode. Already, the management of both stars have reached an agreement allowing both to promote in shows on either channels (a policy that has never been done previous to this tandem). So, many Kapuso fans are getting the surprise of their lives when they see Kathryn (with Alden) in a Kapuso show like Unang Hirit (Monday last week) and Alden with Kathryn in Kapamilya shows.

At the press conference for the film last week, the Dolphy Theatre at the ABS-CBN complex was filled with fans of both stars that screamed even at the slightest gesticulations of either stars. And it was gracious enough for the Kapamilya network to allow fans of Alden Richards along with several GMA Artist Center officers at the press con venue.

A writer asked if Kathryn would be allowed to do a project for the film arm of the Kapuso network if it has any plan to produce one with the star. While Kathryn said without hesitation, “I wouldn’t mind,” the Star Cinema officer said, “We’ll cross the bridge when we get there. Meanwhile, let’s focus on Hello, Love, Goodbye first.”

The members of the media were also interested to know if ABS-CBN would allow Kathryn to promote in the rival network’s noontime show (where Alden is a regular co-host) and the officer’s response was, “We’re fixing Kathryn’s schedule.” But since, the actress had already appeared on one Kapuso show last week, it may not be impossible to see her in the noontime show anytime soon, at least before the show opens on 31 July.

The people behind the film revealed that it took some time before the project could take off (because of the Ping-Pong game-like negotiations between Star Cinema and the Kapuso network) and they felt relieved when finally the guys on the corner of Timog and EDSA finally gave their green and go to the nearly impossible pairing.

Alden recounted his first encounter with Kathryn for the film during the story conference in the Kapamilya complex. “We had met before in events but not for a project either on TV or in film so in a way I already know the kind of person Kathryn is,” Alden said and to which Kathryn agreed.

Both never anticipated though that the stars in heaven would align and bring them together for a movie project.

Hello, Love, Goodbye is a movie about two strangers who eventually fall in love with each other. It is also about Filipinos working in a foreign country (in this case in Hong Kong, a special autonomous region of China).

The director said that the first scene she shot was the first time the two characters meet. She said she wanted to catch the raw emotions that two have for each other. Prior to that she ordered Kathryn not to speak to her co-stars that would last for the entire duration of the shoot.

Kathryn recalled saying that her first scene with Alden in Hong Kong was “weird” and the director had an explanation for that,

“I intentionally did a heavy scene, it was also their first scene together in the film. I don’t know how they’d look together on screen although I’ve seen them together during the storycon and the look test, I still want to know what they have together on screen. And I wanted them to see it for themselves,” she said.

Meanwhile, Alden remembers the time Cathy upfront told him about his weight. It seemed the director had an issue about his weight.

“During the look test, we did a couple of looks, kami po ni Kath. Nakikita ko na po kay direk parang may hinahanap. Parang naghahanap po ng panga,” Richards said at the press conference.

“Nagte-take na po kami ng mgatest shots. Parang di na po yata napigilan ni direk. Sabi niya: ‘Alden, halika tignan mo ang taba mo,’” he said laughing.

Instead of being disheartened by the comment, Richards said it became his motivation to lose some weight.

“After the look test, one month pa po yata yun na preparationbago tayo nagHong Kong. Sabi ko ‘Direk, kapag nakita niyo po ako, hindi na po ganyan ang itsura ko,’” Richards said.

Mas mataba na po,” he quipped.

“And he kept his word,” Cathy said.

The 27-year-old actor said he lost “around 20 to 25 pounds in a month and a half” and was proud to share he did this without the help of anyone.
