Very rare in showlaland for a marriage to last for 15 years, but for showbiz couple Tonton Gutierrez and Glydel Mercado, their decade and a half was a breeze.
“We didn’t notice that time has passed by this long,” Tonton said during a gathering of some press friends on a rainy Friday lunchtime. His wife was also with him. They were to sign a contract renewing their ties with Rhea Anicoche-Tan’s flourishing BeautéDerm, a company that produces and sells a variety of skincare products and other personal and home care line.
The power couple, as they are known in showbiz, have been ambassadors of Tan’s company, well, at least, Glydel who, according to Tan, is among the most zealous in the BeautéDerm’s roster of brand endorsers. Tonton’s stint with the brand came along naturally as he discovered the effects of some of the products he tried from among his wife’s BeautéDerm loot at homer.
“I tried the face wash, and I noticed several days later that the dark spots on my complexion was beginning to fade,” he said adding, “I play golf when I have time, so I guess having dark spots on my skin was due to excessive sun exposure.”
Golf is among the ties that bind Tonton and Glydel. “We, as much as possible, play golf together or separately. She with the ladies and I with the gentlemen on the same course, naturally.”
Glydel has been using BeautéDerm’s sunblock each time she’s on the golf course, and it shows how her complexion is protected from the damaging effects of the sun. She said that she never insisted that Tonton use the products but she was surprised when he started telling her about using them.
Tonton and Glydel met in the 90s, became friends and eventually a couple. In 2004, they got married and they have been together in the last 15 years.
How did they keep their marriage this long?
Glydel said, “Our communication is always open. When talk about our projects, our children, how we manage our day-to-day lives, the expenses at home and other business. In other words, walang taguan.Everything is open.”
“And if we don’t agree on some things, we try to sort things out, not fight over them. We try to find solutions to problems together,” Tonton added.
“I am not the jealous type. I don’t make ‘patol sa mga intriga.’ If I want to know about something I heard about Tonton, I’d ask him,” Glydel said.
“We don’t actually mingle with showbiz folk a lot,” said Tonton. “We love to be home, be with the kids, especially now that Aneeza is now a teenager. Kailangan na nila ng guidance from her parents,” the actor said. “She’s now 14 and one time I even asked her if she is a tomboy. And she said, ‘no dad, I’m a girl.”
Tonton was a bit bothered that Aneeza preferred pants to skirts and that made him a little suspicious and thought his eldest would grow up to be a lesbian.
“I really don’t mind if she is one, but I would just like to know so we would know how to deal with her,” Tonton clarified.”
The couple’s younger daughter Aneeka is only 8-years old and is fan of Maine Mendoza, according to Glydel.
