Even in sports, embattled Gerald Anderson prevails, In last Sunday’s Star Magic All-Star Games at the Araneta Coliseum, the actor now in the midst of a raging controversy involving his ex, Bea Alonzo, and rumored current squeeze Julia Barretto, was named most valuable player (MVP) after Team Gerald/Daniel overcame Team Vice/It’s Showtime in a basketball showdown, the main attraction of the games.
Anderson and Daniel Padilla joined forces to prove they are the kings of the basketball court, defeating Vice Ganda's team in double overtime.
Apart from Anderson and Padilla, the other team members were Kyle Velino, Gerhard Acao, Patrick Sugui, Joe Vargas, Jose Sarasola, Ronnie Alonte, Donny Pangilinan, Axel Tores, Young JV Kapunan, Zanjoe Marudo, JC de Vera, Ejay Falcon and Joseph Marco.
Meanwhile, Jerome Ponce's team also won in the new breed men's basketball category defeating Elmo Magalona’s Blue Team 46-42.
It seems lady luck wasn't too kind on Julia Barretto whose team was overpowered by Kim Chiu’s team composed of Ysa Jimemez, Dalia Varde, Gillian Vicencio, Yasmyne Suarez, Chienna Filomeno, Vivoree Esclito, Analain Lim, Nikki Valdez and Jia Morado.
Barretto's blue team, meanwhile, is composed of Carly Hernandez, Arabella del Rosario, Ella San Andres, Aiyanna Waggoner, Ashley Colet, Pamu Pamorada, Katherine Gallo, Loisa Andalio and Gretchen Ho.
Chiu’s team defeated Julia Barretto's blue team 23-21.
The audience seemed excited to see Vice Ganda and his rumored boyfriend Ion Perez who played for Vice’s team versus Anderson/Padilla’s team. Fans howled when Kuya Escort (that’s Perez’s moniker in It’s Showtime) scored three points as Vice dashed to the court to embrace him.
Earlier, before the games, Perez said he and Vice are merely good friends, yet what the fans saw on the court was than that.
If they are, really, why would they hold hands while Kuya Escort was dribbling the ball? Eyebrows in the audience seemed to meet when they saw that scene.
Scene stealer as well was Xian Lim’s blow of a flying kiss to Kim Chiu before her service “for good luck” he said while the song, “Ikaw Nga Ba si Mr. Right?” by the team leader was blurting all over the coliseum.
Backstage, someone saw Kathryn Bernardo of the monstrous hit Hello, Love, Goodbye! give her beau, Daniel, a good luck kiss.
Zanjoe Marudo of Team Gerald/Daniel was hit during an intense play with Eric Tai of Team Vice/It’s Showtime causing a wound on his left eyebrow.
A thunderous applause metVice’s free throw when the referee called a foul on Daniel Padilla.
Well, despite the rains, the fans were all at the Araneta Coliseum enjoying every minute of the games and welcoming the sight of the stars, not in the usual glam look that they see on TV and stage, but sweaty in their teams’ uniforms.
Gerald’s mom speaks up
Finally, Evangeline Opsima, mother of actor Gerald Anderson has spoken. In an interview for TV Patrol on 23 August, Vangie, as she is known among her friends, said she could no longer take the bashing of the media that his son has been getting since the news of his break up with girlfriend Bea Alonzo.
In the vernacular, she said, “He didn’t insult you, never. My son and I would always argue about you because I never liked you for him. Now, you’re treating him like trash. Is that how you look at Gerald, trash?”
Vangie also had words for Bea’s make up artist. “Even your make up artist is bad mouthing my son! I can’t just keep quiet about this issue.”
On Julia, Vangie has only this to say, “I am not saying I don’t like you. My advice is, my son is much older than you are. Your relationship, if you have one, won’t last because you are both in the (entertainment) industry.”
